Tea tree oil and aloe for healing new tattoos?
Has anyone tried using tea tree oil for healing a new tattoo? I'm not a big fan of antibiotics (like bacitracin) or any chemicals. I try to stick with natural products and letting my body heal itself as much as possible. I've had a lot of tattoo work done recently and want your opinions and/or experiences using tea tree oil for healing tattoos. I kind of have in mind, using tea tree oil, (full strength or diluted with water) along with an aloe based lotion (or pure aloe) Opinions?

my rule of thumb when getting a tattoo and the after care is to follow the advice of the artist that gave you the tattoo to a T. If something goes wrong while healing and for some reason it needs to be touched up then the artist will fix it free of charge and you will not feel like an A if you didnt do what they told you to do and it turns out looking like crap. My artist advice is to use Aquaphor and I love it. My tattoo always seems to heal faster each time and looks great. I wouldnt mess with any essential oils on a new tattoo. Good luck and congrats on your art.
my sister tried tea tree oil and it worked really good!! its also good for hair.
Ouch, isn’t tea tree oil an astringent? Personally, I wouldn’t take someone’s answer that didn’t have firsthand knowledge, "my sister used it" etc.
I’d stick w/ the aloe by itself. The idea is to heal the skin, not keep disinfecting it. If you keep it covered (aloe and gauze), it should heal up fine. A word of advice, don’t pick any of the scabs, it’ll pull the color right out. Sorry, TMI, but I did that, not realizing, and mine has a bit of a small blank spot where I picked at it while it was healing.
Good luck!
A friend of mines tried to use tea tree oil on his, it totally irrigated it…so i will say it depends on your skin…tea tree oil is some pretty strong stuff when used concentrated. I would dilute it with some coco butter oil but the coco butter can be use alone. It works just as good and helps limit the peeling. Hope this helps!
Tea tree oil is a big no no for healing tatts, in fact any essential oil. Full strength or diluted they will irritate the healing skin.
On the other hand, Aloe Vera is wonderful for healing tatts AFTER they have peeled.
If your work is still fresh and hasn’t peeled yet, go and see a naturopath and ask them to make up an herbal, antibacterial creme for you to use, but still be very careful, if you notice any irritation quit using it straight away.
As soon as it starts to shed, switch to your aloe vera!!
Good luck
I would never advise using either of those. One is an astringent, the other is for burns. I’d say if anything, Pure Shea Butter with a few drops of pure lavender oil mixed in. It will work great and be all natural.
Your not meant to use anything on your tatt other than warm water until its healed.
I can honestly tell you that I do not know very much about Tea Tree Oil and I have never heard it being recommended for use on a tattoo. I have 23 tats and on every one of them I have used Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion (Fragrance Free) and have never had any problems from using it. I have been tattooed by many popular artists all over the USA and they all have said to use the same thing so if 23 different artists come up with the same product it’s got to be safe right? The person who tattooed you should of explained clearly what was to be used and if he/she didn’t then I don’t know if I would return to them. Most will give you a sheet of paper or their business card that has after care instructions on it. Call your tattooist back and ask what would be best to use. I wouldn’t use something without checking first…you paid a lot of money and sat to get it done not to mention the possible pain you went through to get it so why try something that could damage it?? Good Luck to you….
